Here are some striking facts about prematurity:

• Today, 1 out of 10 babies are born preterm.
• Unless the necessary health conditions are provided after premature births, it becomes difficult for babies to hold onto life.
• Around 75% of infant deaths are caused by premature births.
• The risk of neurological disorders is 60% in infants with extremely low birth weight (under 1000 grams/ 2.204 lbs)
• The earlier the birth takes place, the more serious the baby’s problems will get.
• There is about a 10-fold increase in the number of twins or triplets born today due to techniques such as IVF, vaccination and so on. Twenty-five percent of twins and 45 percent of triplets require intensive care.
